Small chip or big chip? How to check which one your card has

Two chip sizes are common on Indian bank cards. Here is how to tell them apart in ten seconds, and why both work in a metal card.

By Metacards · Updated

Look at the gold or silver square on the front of your bank card. That is the chip, and it comes in two common sizes. Both work perfectly in a steel card, but knowing yours helps us cut the slot to fit.

The ten-second check

  • Small chip: clearly wider than it is tall. Usually 6 contact pads. About 10.8 × 8.2 mm.
  • Big chip: almost square. Usually 8 contact pads. About 13 × 11.8 mm.

Still unsure? Measure its width with a ruler. About 11 mm is small, about 13 mm is big.

Does the chip size change how the card works?

No. Both sizes work the same at every card machine and ATM. The size only matters for how we prepare the slot in your steel card.

What if my card has no chip?

Then it cannot be converted, because the chip is what we move into the steel card. Ask your bank for a chip card, then come back.

Still not sure?

Send a photo of just the chip on WhatsApp and we will tell you. You never need to share your card number for this, so cover it with your finger.
