How to convert your debit or credit card into a metal card

Your own chip, your own account, rebuilt in 27 g of engraved steel. Here is exactly how the conversion works, step by step.

By Metacards · Updated

A metal card is not a new bank card. It is your own card's chip, moved into a card made of stainless steel. Your bank, card number, account and PIN stay exactly the same. Here is how the conversion works at Metacards, from choosing a design to paying with steel.

What actually happens to your card

Every chip debit or credit card carries a small gold or silver chip. That chip is what talks to the card machine. We take that same chip out of your plastic card and fix it into a 27 g stainless steel card that is engraved with your design and your details. Nothing is copied and nothing is stored. The chip simply moves house.

Step 1: Pick a design and finish

Choose from our pre-made designs or design your own with your logo, artwork or name. Every design comes in nine finishes, from matte black and gold to glossy silver and rose gold.

Step 2: Approve the preview on WhatsApp

Before anything is engraved, we send you a preview on WhatsApp. Nothing is cut until you say yes. This is the moment to check your name and details.

Step 3: Choose how the chip moves

You get two options at checkout:

  • We transfer it (8 to 10 business days). The moment you order, we book a doorstep pickup. Your card is collected within 24 hours, a specialist moves the chip into the steel card, every card is tested, and it comes back to you by insured, tracked express.
  • Self-Kit (3 to 5 business days). Your card never leaves your hands. We ship your engraved card with an adhesive kit and a video guide, and you move the chip at home in a few minutes. Every product page has a short animation that shows each step.

Step 4: Pay with steel

Once the chip is in, you pay by inserting the card at card machines and ATMs, exactly as you insert a chip card today. Solid steel has no tap-to-pay, so keep your phone for tap payments if you use them a lot.

Will my card work?

If your card has a chip, it can be converted. Small chip or big chip, both work. If your card has no chip, ask your bank for a chip card first. Not sure? Send us a photo of the front of your card on WhatsApp (cover the card number) and we will tell you.

How much does it cost?

Pre-made designs start at ₹2,799 and a fully custom card is ₹3,499, with free shipping across India. See our guide to metal card prices in India for what you get at each price.
